Community Safety
There are specially trained officers within each Area Command dedicated to Community Safety and Crime Prevention work.
A number of these Constables, who were based at Force HQ, but now provide a more localised service within our communities, have responsibility for youth justice, CCTV, architectural liaison, anti-social behaviour, and general crime reduction respectively and ensure that the Force adheres to ACPOS and national guidelines.
Architectural Liaison
The role of the Architectural Liaison Officer or ALO is to promote the principles of crime prevention through environmental design and involves intervention by our staff in the planning phases of a building or site layout. The ALO provides advice, from a Police perspective, on how to prevent crime and anti-social behaviour at these sites upon completion. Northern Constabulary promotes the application for and, if successful, the awarding of the Secured by Design Award.
These awards are achieved when projects meet the required standards as set out by the Secured by Design guidelines. For further information on the Secured by Design scheme please visit the website www.securedbydesign.com.
Anti-social behaviour
The Anti-Social Behaviour Liaison Officer forms part of a multi-agency team within the Highland Council whose function is to support both the operational Area Commands and the interested parties within the Highland Council in relation to anti-social behaviour and the pursuit of Anti-Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOs). For further information in relation to issues regarding the above please email Antisocial Behaviour Officer PC Mairi Smith.
The Highland Council Housing and Social Work Committee are currently offering a short online questionnaire on the ASB Policy and proposed information leaflet.
Force Vandalism Campaign
Northern Constabulary is committed to reducing incidents of vandalism across the Highlands and Islands.
Each Area Command has its own vandalism action team with dedicated and highly trained officers tasked with educating our communities as well as enforcing the law in relation to a crime which is anything but victimless.
The Force has produced an anti-vandalism film which is being beamed to strategically positioned screens in Inverness and Tain. The theme of the short film is the cost of vandalism to the taxpayer as well as the distress caused to those who suffer at the hands of vandals.
