Policing the Communities of the Highlands and Islands

Crime Trends

Inverness City is the urban centre of Northern Constabulary's Force area. In summary the city’s crime trends fall mainly into two distinct groups, namely alcohol-fuelled disorder and drug-driven crime.

In tackling these effectively the Area Commander has invested in a strong pro-active team which feeds from daily intelligence to tackle those involved in dealing drugs. The team also uses this intelligence to maintain a comprehensive approach to tackling anti-social behaviour, much of which has alcohol as a root cause.

New tools are being utilised in the form of a dedicated mobile CCTV Unit, funded by money successfully secured through the Safer Cities/Safer Towns initiative. This vehicle, supplemented by a contingent of trained Special Constables is deployed most weekends to provide a crime enforcement tool and deterrent measure in recognised hot-spots.

Effective partnership working is in place ensuring productive information exchange with the Anti Social Behaviour Team of Highland Council to target those individuals who are constantly indulging in anti-social behaviour and detracting from Community Safety by making application for Anti-Social Behaviour Orders and other interventions.

Recently agreement has been reached with the Highland Council to extend the current public space CCTV system to provide greater coverage of the pedestrian routes into the City Centre and the Ness Islands.

On a daily and monthly basis trends are professionally analysed to provide informed guidance in terms of where to best deploy our resources for maximum effect.
