The two Police stations in Orkney are stationed at Kirkwall and Stromness. The outer North and South Isles are serviced by the Orkney Rural Beats Section, which also police South Ronaldsay and Burray.

Tourism, the oil industry, distilling, craftwork, food processing, and light engineering are now well established, alongside traditional industries such as farming and fishing. These contribute to the progressive economy of these islands, which keeps unemployment extremely low.
