Policing the Communities of the Highlands and Islands

Command Team

Western Isles Area Command is headed by Chief Inspector Gordon MacLeod, assisted by Inspector Steve Black, and supported by the following officers;

  • Chief Inspectors - 1
  • Inspectors - 1
  • Sergeants - 8
  • Constables - 39
  • Special Constables - 6
  • Cadets - 1

There is also a 21-strong team of support staff. They fulfil a variety of roles and their skills, flexibility and dedication have been integral to the success of the Command Area.

A recruitment drive in 2005/06 saw the appointment of additional Special Constables in Lewis and Harris.  Special Constables provide invaluable support to their full-time colleagues.  This assistance is essentially voluntary, although a recognition award of £1000 was introduced in 2005 for Special Constables who completed 160 hrs service within a financial year.

The use of Cadets was re-introduced by Northern Constabulary in 2007.  The result of this is that the Western Isles has a Police Cadet for the first time since 1990.  She has already dealt with a variety of incidents and has been involved in liaison visits to schools.
