Policing the Communities of the Highlands and Islands

Community Consultation

The purpose of the Northern Constabulary Community Consultation surveys is to determine the views and needs of Northern Constabulary's communities with respect to police services, criminal justice and public safety. The results have enabled Northern Constabulary and its partners to:

  • Support the Northern Joint Police Boards statutory obligations with respect to the Local Government Act 2003; in particular public engagement, continuous improvement and development of Best Value.
  • Inform the development of Single Outcome Agreements
  • Guide its improvement activity as part of the Scottish Governments Efficiency programme.
  • Inform the Forces' planning processes, priorities and objectives.

2011 Consultation Survey
Over nine thousand households across the Highlands and Islands were asked to take part in the 2011 survey which over the next year, will directly influence the future priorities and services provided by Northern Constabulary and its partners.

This survey was just one of the ways in which we seek the views of the people we serve across the Highlands and Islands. It provides us with an invaluable insight into the current concerns and the priorities of our local communities. Together with the many other ways in which we consult and engage with communities, it is a very important contribution to help us to develop and improve the services that we provide.

The survey in 2009 as with the latest survey indicated that alcohol related crime, anti-social behaviour, drugs and speeding were the main concerns for our communities. As a result, a number of significant activities were under taken to reduce the impact that these issues were having on our communities. These include specific Operations such as Operation Roundup to counter under age drinking, Operations Respect and Notebook to counter antisocial behaviour and Operation Route to target speeding in villages.

The introduction of Alcohol Consumption Byelaws and the community work undertaken, by offenders, through Fiscal Work Orders has also helped to address the issues raised.

The households were selected at random to provide a representative sample of the views of the people living in the Highlands and Islands and responses were completely confidential.
