Crime Services, Service Unit based at Force Headquarters is responsible for working in tandem with Divisions and local crime management units providing specialist support functions where the expertise of specialist staff is required to reinforce resource and investigative requirements during a major incident or a prolonged enquiry.

The service unit is used on a daily basis to provide support, guidance and resource assistance where required in the pursuance of detecting crime.

The service unit is led by a Detective Superintendent (head of crime services) who has overall responsibility for the investigation of serious crime throughout the Force area, and for the appointment of Senior Investigative Officers (SIO's) to each major incident. There are two Detective Chief Inspectors supporting the head of crime services each with portfolios for Operations, and Public Protection, Security & Intelligence respectively.

Crime Services operates with 3 functional business areas delivering the collective capabilities and services required. Working separately or, in combination as needs dictate, or augmenting existing Divisional resources where necessary. Each business area is led by a Detective Inspector supported by an allocation of detective officers and police staff.
