The Force Information Management Unit (F.I.M.U.) was created in April 2008 as a product of the Force's strategic capacity and capability review (2006-2009).
F.I.M.U. has brought together a range of linked but previously disparate services, with a view to streamlining and improving supporting processes, eliminating duplication and increasing efficiency.
The Unit is headed by Chief Inspector Paul Eddington who has responsibility for the distinct areas of Crime Administration, Disclosure and Intelligence management. F.I.M.U. is an essential part of the Force’s approach to the Management of Police Information (MoPI) and the development of efficient information management systems and processes.
The Unit carries out daily reviews on Force compliance with the Scottish Crime Recording Standard and co-ordinates and provides essential performance management information to the Force Executive and to Operational Commanders to support strategic, tactical and operational decision-making.
Disclosure covers the areas of Data Protection, Vetting, Information Standards audit, Freedom of Information and release of Road Traffic Collision and Criminal Injuries information.
Intelligence management is self explanatory and Crime Administration covers the essential areas of data inputting into the Criminal History System, Imaging, Fixed Penalty administration and Road Traffic Collision data inputting.
Additionally, Crime Administration researches co-ordinates and prepares the crime statistics and the monthly performance pack, as well as the ACPOS quarterly statistical return and the Audit Scotland and Scottish Government statistical returns. The F.I.M.U. Analyst provides a strategic role and assists in co-ordinating and developing the use of Divisional Analytical capability, to support the Force’s use of the National Intelligence Model.
Since April 2008, F.I.M.U. has introduced a digital dictation software system (voicebanking) across the entire force area, saving over 250,000 pages of forms in its first year of operation and in Autumn 2008, leads on the force implementation for the new standard reporting suite, known nationally as SPR2, alongside its normal daily business.
