Human Resources
The Human Resources Service Unit is responsible for providing the Force with professional guidance and support in the efficient and effective management of its people.
Headed by Director Andrea Sillars, the Unit provides the following services:-
- Recruitment – two staff organise the advertisement of vacancies, recruitment of Police officers and Police staff, conduct interviews for prospective candidates, and organise health/fitness tests. Use the Recruitment link to find out more about career opportunities within Northern Constabulary.
- Payroll – consists of 3 staff members, who process the salaries of Police and Police staff, in accordance with conditions of service, to meet legislative requirements.
- Occupational Health and Welfare – one member of staff assigned to deal with issues surrounding health within the workplace and the management of sickness absence and ill health retirals. Staff members also have access to a full-time welfare officer.
- HR Policy Development – deals with all matters relating to the development of personnel policy, family friendly policies and employment law related issues.
- Administration – supports all human resources staff in relation to filing, typing, budgets and has overall responsibility for the personnel information system.
- Training and Career Development – the department is responsible for the training of all staff in the following areas; leadership and management development, Police probationer cadet training, IT and general training, and promotion assessment centres.
Many of the priorities of the Human Resources Unit are determined from a national agenda, for example the developing case law in regard to diversity strands, which has significant implications for the Force and the terms and conditions of all staff.
In addition to the functions above, the Human Resources Service Unit also contains the staff associations (Police Federation and UNISON).
