Bluelight Events

Introduction

Bluelight is a project that provides discos for young people, which was born in Fife. Entry to each disco, which is strictly controlled by Police officers, is by pre-purchase of a ticket and undertaking a breath test and a search. Anyone failing the test will be denied entry and will be taken home by Police officers.

The Bluelight event gives young people the opportunity to see that fun can be had without indulging in alcohol abuse, drugs or anti-social behaviour which unfortunately some of their peers do engage in.

Ross-shire Bluelight Partnership

This is an award winning, innovative and successful project. In November 2008 following the success of the second Bluelight event the partnership was nominated for and delighted to receive the Highland Council Quality Award in the Citizen Health, Safety and Wellbeing category.

The inaugural Scottish Policing Awards took place at the Scottish Police College at Tulliallan in October 2009 and the work of the Bluelight Partnership Committee of Northern Constabulary in Ross and Cromarty Area Command was Highly Commended.

The awards were supported by ACPOS (Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland), COSLA, Scottish Police Federation, ASPS (Association of Scottish Police Superintendents), Scottish Police Services Authority (SPSA), Scottish Police Authorities Convenors Forum, HM Inspectorate of Constabulary for Scotland, Scottish Government, UNISON and the Scottish Chief Police Officers Staff Association.

The Scottish Policing Awards 2009 were first proposed by the Scottish Government to recognise work undertaken by the Police service in Scotland and its partner agencies, which contributes to the Governments strategic objectives.

The Bluelight initiative in Scotland has been recognised nationally as best practice initiative for dealing with anti social behaviour relating to youths.
