Caithness, Sutherland & East Ross Area Command
Caithness, Sutherland & East Ross is a vast area spanning some 9,000 square kilometres with a dispersed population. West and North Sutherland are extremely mountainous and in some areas very inaccessible.
Thurso, Wick, Dornoch and Tain are the main centres of population in the area, situated on the main arterial route of the A9. To the west of Thurso, is Scrabster, which is a large fishing and ferry port on the North Coast. It also provides the main access to and from Orkney by ferry as well as attracting increased cruise ship visits throughout the year. The two main Sutherland fishing ports are Kinlochbervie and Lochinver.
The Dounreay Nuclear site and the Royal Naval facility at HMS Vulcan are the two largest single employers in the Area Command.
The huge area and difficult geographical terrain and extensive coastline present significant challenges for policing. Intelligence-led policing, visibility and developing community partnership working are key priorities for the command.
