Data Protection
The Data Protection Act 1998 places certain obligations on organisations which process personal data to notify the purposes for which information is held or used, to the UK Information Commissioner, and to observe a set of agreed principles.
The Data Protection Act 1998 came into effect on 1st March 2000 and provides individuals with the right of access to information that may be held about themselves.
This is called subject access. It is a qualified right of access, which does not extend to certain types of information including information that might identify other individuals whose data is held under a duty of confidence.
For requesting information about yourself please see question one of our Frequently Asked Questions.
