Older People's Issues group

Group's work

Northern Constabulary in partnership with the Highland Community Care Forum, Help the Aged/Age Concern and the Highland Senior Citizens Network have recently formed a group dedicated to looking at Older Peoples Issues in our force area, including our island communities.

The group will, on a local basis, progress actions set out in the ACPOS Older People's Strategy and will work with other partners, as and when required, to promote activity around these actions. The group's first two projects are a Peer Speaking pilot and promoting inter-generational working. Northern Constabulary is also represented on the ACPOS Older People's Reference group

Peer Speaking Project

The group's first project is a Peer Speaking Pilot, which will involve key information being delivered to older people by older people. Through local presentations, e.g. senior citizens groups, peer speaking volunteers will deliver information to older people. Research indicates that most people accept information more readily from their peers, who they see as having a similar understanding of life as themselves. We are still in the planning stages at present but we will post updates on this website to keep you informed of progress

Inter-generational Working

Ongoing work to bring young people and older people together in a bid to bridge generational gaps and create a better understanding between the two age groups.

Scottish Helpline for Older People
Telephone: 0845 125 9732 (calls are charged at a local rate )
Textphone: 0845 226 5851

The service is open from 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday. Offers an independent, confidential telephone based information service to people aged 50 and over living in Scotland, and to those associated with them such as their carers and families.

Their aim is to provide people with the information they require to enable them to make their own decisions about their own lives - about maintaining indpendence, enabling freedom of choice and empowerment. They can provide translation services, have facilities to help them deal with enquiries from people who have hearing difficulties and from those who have sight problems. They deal with all types of enquiries and the Helpline is manned by both paid and volunteer trained information workers who have a wide range of experience.

Some of the volunteers are over 70 years old and are acutely aware of the issues faced by older people today.
