Road Safety

One of the four main strategic priorities of the Force is to provide safer roads with reduced deaths, injury and crime.
In terms of Road Safety, the Force works with a number of partner agencies, including Fire and Rescue, the Scottish Ambulance Service, the Scottish Executive and Trunk Road Authorities, in running a mumber of initiatives in support of the Force strategic priority.
In 1999 the Government challenged the country to reduce deaths and injury on our roads, and set demanding targets for progressive improvement over ten years, based on the average number of casualties between 1994 and 1998.
For more information please refer to the Fatal Collision Statistics document within the Statistics, campaigns and information section on this page.
There are three specific targets:
- 40% reduction in killed and seriously injured casualties by 2010
- 50% reduction in children killed and seriously injured casualties by 2010
- 10% reduction in the slight casualty rate, expressed as the number of people slightly injured per 100 million vehicle kilometres.
Northern Constabulary is fully committed to achieving the Government targets for casualty reduction.
The Force operates the national Bikesafe scheme to encourage safer motorcycling.
