Shetland Area Command
Shetland Area Command is the most northerly and remote Police Command in the United Kingdom. Due to the islands' geographical location, there is almost perpetual daylight during the summer, whilst in the long winter, the 'Northern Lights' are frequently seen. Shetland is at the crossroads of Scotland and Scandinavia, its situation being almost equidistant between Aberdeen and the Norwegian city of Bergen. The main transport links with the UK mainland are through Aberdeen, with frequent ferry and air services.
The island's economy is a combination of a properous oil industry, tourism and agriculture. The spectacular scenery, cultural importance and abundant wildlife draw tourists during the summer months and the "Up Helly Aa" festival is a popular winter attraction.
The remote and expansive geographical setting, weather and transport infrastructure present unique policing challenges, but resilient policing and strong partnership working ensure that this remains one of Scotland's safest communities.
