Statement From Press Conference 29th November 2004
STATEMENT 29.11.04 FATAL SHOOTING - NAIRN
Detective Chief Inspector Peter MacPhee (Senior Investigating Officer)
"The murder of Alistair Wilson, a 30-year-old business manager who works for the Bank of Scotland at Beechwood Business Park, Inverness, can only be described as horrendous.
"Alistair's wife Veronica answered the door last night around 7.15pm and was met with a man who asked to speak to her husband. At that time both Veronica and Alistair were in the process of putting their two young boys to bed, a four-year-old and a two-and-a-half-year-old.
"When Alistair approached the door he was, what can only be described as, brutally gunned down on the steps of his house. His assailant then made off, leaving Veronica to run to neighbours for help. She ran to the Havelock Hotel which is directly across the road from the house for assistance. Meanwhile the assailant left along Crescent Road heading towards Marine Road on foot. There is currently no information to suggest that a vehicle was involved at this stage.
House to house enquries began last night including the patrons of the Havelock Hotel.
"There would appear to be absolutely no motive for this despicable crime. Alistair was an upstanding member of the community in Nairn and well-known in business banking circles.
"I have formed a sizeable inquiry team to carry out an investigation and this morning have assistance from the Grampian Police laboratory and from the ballistics section at Strathclyde Police.
"House to house inquiries began last night and are being co-ordinated this morning from the incident room at Nairn Police office.
"We have appointed a Family Liaison Officer to look after Veronica and her two young children.
"A post-mortem is due to take place late this morning.
There is currently a high visibility Police presence in the town which will continue for as long as necessary and I also have to state that a number of officers on patrol are armed.
"I would again appeal to members of the community to contact Police if they have any information at all, in particular as this incident happened in the early evening there may have been dog walkers out in the Crescent Road area who have seen the after-described man.
"Aged 35-40, 5 ' 4", of stocky build, wearing a baseball hat and blouson jacket. He is described as clean shaven."
