Policing the Communities of the Highlands and Islands

Welcome to Western Isles Area Command

The Western Isles, also known as the Outer Hebrides harbour on the east coast of the Isle of Lewis. The town has all the amenities and industry of a medium-sized mainland town, along with a lively and vibrant social scene. The town is also served by a car ferry to Ullapool and an airport with direct flights to Inverness, Glasgow and Aberdeen, are a chain of islands some 30 miles off the north-west coast of Scotland. The main islands are - from north to south - Lewis, Harris, North Uist, Benbecula, South Uist and Barra. The main town - and location of the Area Command Headquarters - is Stornoway, found in a sheltered.

Large numbers of visitors come to the islands each year to take part in outdoor pursuits, visit sites of historical interest and attend events such as the annual Hebridean Celtic Festival.

The islands are home to over 26,500 people and as such this requires a flexible and problem-solving approach to policing by the Western Isles command.
